The sloped roofs in your model do half the work; the recipe names the rest. Say the tile (Mangalore), the plinth (laterite), the walls (whitewashed lime) and the verandah floor (red oxide). Add what grows around it, coconut and banana, and the after-rain light Kerala is known for.

  1. Where "Rural Kerala, a coconut grove around the house, a red-earth path, paddy fields beyond"
  2. Materials "Mangalore clay tile roofs, laterite stone plinth, whitewashed lime walls, dark teak columns, red oxide verandah floor; coconut palms, banana plants"
  3. People "An elderly man reading on the verandah bench"
  4. Light Humid after-rain

Tip: this works best on a model with sloped roofs. A flat-roofed box won't turn into a tharavad.
